Nate Saunders over at ESPN F1 has !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! comparing F1's emphasis on spectacle over substance to the farcical joke that was Vince McMahon's XFL. It's worth a read.

Apparently artificial sparks and standing restarts are a couple of the answers to F1's falling viewing figures, two gimmicks which alone are unlikely to make former fans and people who have never watched the sport before reach for their wallets and splash out on subscriptions to F1 coverage. As Maurice Hamilton wrote on ESPNF1 this week, any notion the latter will make for a more entertaining spectacle is wishful thinking. Much like with the controversial double points format for the season finale, F1 appears to be giving fans answers to questions no-one was asking.

F1 cars on rally-stages and hill-climbs, that will get people to watch, I know it will.

Isn't it arguably worse so long as F1 doesn't so to say "go full retard"? I mean, the XFL was at least kind of funny - adding pointless gimmicks and not being in on the joke seems like it would be worse than doing so in full self-awareness. At least, up until the postmodernism destroys everything in a volcano of smug.

Are you an art critic? This line is brilliant.

I'm not an art critic, but I *am* very sarcastic - and critical.

Definitely could learn from him about bad investments. Vince made XFL as mentionned earlier and it failed. He made WWF New York, it failed. He supported his wife Linda McMahon with a good chunk of money so that she could be a U.S. Senator, it failed and because of this WWE became PG to make sure her compaigns would not be affected with bloody matches. MAJOR FAIL because now we are stuck with Cena and his superman gimmick...Now the WWE Network is another fiasco with the TV deal he done in May with NBCUniversal which got him out of the Billionaire club overnight with his net worth going from 1.1 Billion to 750 Million and got talents "released" in the process...
